Firmoo: Fashion the Frugal Way (A Review)
Not too long ago, I was contacted by online glasses retailer, Firmoo.com, offering to send me a pair of glasses for review. The timing of this happened to be perfect – I was due for a checkup and new pair of glasses within a month’s time. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity, because a) I’ve always wanted to try online sellers to see if their quality matches up to brick-and-mortar stores, and b) I wanted to avoid the cost of new frames, which can get quite ridiculous.
Before accepting the proposition, however, I wanted to know just how they managed to price their wares so low. After all, pricing starts at $8 for frames, with free standard lenses and anti-scratch coating. So what gives? Why are their glasses so inexpensive, when I’ve had to throw down $200 for glasses in the past? According to Firmoo, the low cost can be highly attributed to the fact that they aren’t brick and mortar, therefore have no overhead costs to cover. Their frames and lenses are bought directly from the manufacturer, further keeping costs down. What does that mean for us, the Joe Q Glasseswearers of the world? Simply that we can pick out quality frames that fit our personal style, and do so for less than we could at any freestanding store.
After agreeing to check out their company, I spent a few days browsing through their selection of frames. I used trying on pair after pair, examining their detailed shots of frames, and throwing all the ‘maybes’ in my Favorites page. Oh, why yes, I did say ‘trying on’, thanks to their Virtual Try-on feature. If you’ve ever browsed glasses online, you’ll know how these work. If you haven’t, though, all you do is upload a face-forward picture of yourself without glasses, and tap in your pupillary distance (PD). If you don’t know your PD, you can quickly and easily measure it yourself
Finally, after humming and hawing about it, I decided on these beauties. Half-rim wire frames are most definitely not my usual fare, but I have always wanted a pair of glasses with magnetic shades. About two weeks later, my glasses arrived in the mail, packed in a heavy-duty glasses case with a microfiber cleaning cloth.
My first impression of these glasses were very good. The frames themselves are sturdy, with strong earpieces. The past two pairs of glasses I had bought were terribly flimsy, despite the high price I paid, so having a solid pair of glasses was a real treat. The magnetic shades are a touch bit flimsy, but I wasn’t expecting too much from those to begin with. They do work quite well, though, snapping on and off with ease, so they’re quite easy to use while driving. The standard, free lenses in the frames themselves are spherical, therefore they can get a bit thick. If you prefer a thinner lens, or if your prescription is strong, they have aspherical lenses up to a strength of +/-10.00, ranging from $9.95 to $110, which is really not a bad price for high-prescription featherlights.
Since these are half-rim frames, though, they wear a lot differently than I’m used to, so it took quite a while for my eyes to adjust to these. Who knew that bottom bit of frame could make such a difference in your perception? After wearing these guys for a month, though, I can definitely say that I love them! I’m lucky in that they needed no adjustments whatsoever – they fit perfectly right out of the package. They also wear incredibly well with just about any outfit, since they are such a simple, understated design.
And now, I get to share the love with you! If you’ve never used Firmoo before, you can score a free pair of glasses and try them out for yourself (affiliate link)! You can choose from a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colours and materials starting at just $8, and even have your Facebook buddies give you their input by sharing your selections on your feed.
