Glostix has teamed up with Team Pink Eye and Unique Pigments to host a giveaway for the cure! What’s all this mean? Just in case you haven’t been following along, a whole gaggle of bloggers and indie makeup companies have banded together to raise money for Susan G Komen for the Cure, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. As of this writing, Team Pink Eye has raised $457 for breast cancer research. You go, guys!
Speaking of guys, I have a little something something to say right about now; something I feel is quite important.
Breast cancer isn’t just a women’s issue – it’s everyone’s issue. Data suggest that 230,480 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. This means that 230,480 families – including husbands, sons, brothers, and grandsons – will be fighting their own emotional battle in addition to their loved one’s battle. Not only are men impacted on an emotional level, but they are also in danger of developing the very same cancer themselves: An estimated 2,140 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
We women are blessed to have a wealth of support and information to help us combat this illness. In each other, we find strength. We need to extend this strength and community to the men in our lives. We know all too well the importance of self-examination. We are told, time and time again, that early detection is the best indicator of recovery. What about the men in our lives? Do they know that breast cancer isn’t just for women? Do they know to check their pecs?
Breast Cancer Awareness month isn’t just about rallying for donations; it’s about raising awareness. So raise some awareness tonight, and talk to your boyfriends or husbands. Talk to your dad. Tell them how important it is to pay attention, and not let anything suspicious go without a doctor’s visit. Tell them that you love them, and you’d feel better if you knew they knew what you know. In more eloquent terms, of course.
